The first viaduct over the Oglio River between Bozzolo and Marcaria dates back to 1874; destroyed by bombing during World War II, the structure was rebuilt between 1945 and the following year, and remained in service for eighty years, until two years ago, when rail traffic on the Mantua-Bozzolo line was suspended to allow for the doubling of the track\u2014a major project commissioned by RFI Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, with construction management and safety coordination by FS Engineering, and carried out by the joint venture consisting of Impresa Pizzarotti & C. S.p.A., Saipem, Gruppo ICM, and Salcef Group.<\/p>\n

In late September 2025, the deck was \u201claunched,\u201d and work is currently underway to construct the new double-track viaduct. The steel structure will consist of 3 piers and 2 abutments, resulting in 4 spans\u2014one more than the previous structure. The entire viaduct\u2014which will resemble the original late-19th-century structure\u2014will be approximately 246 meters long and weigh 3,600 tons, about 900 tons per span.<\/p>\n

According to the construction schedule, the bridge will be completed in early 2027. The steps involved in building the structure are complex and multifaceted; abutments A and B, on the Bozzolo and Marcaria sides respectively, have already been completed.<\/p>\n
