RFI has awarded the contract for the construction of the new Santomarco Tunnel on the Cosenza-Paola\/San Lucido line. The contract was awarded to the Santomarco consortium led by Webuild, which includes Impresa Pizzarotti together with Ghella and Seli Overseas. <\/p>\n
The project, a key element in the completion of the new Salerno\u2013Reggio Calabria high-speed\/high-capacity line, for which Impresa Pizzarotti is already working on Lot 1A Battipaglia-Romagnano, adds to the ambitious development plan for Southern Italy in which the company is involved with over \u20ac3.21 billion in contracted works and more than 200 km of infrastructure to be built. These include the Naples-Bari and Messina-Catania high-speed\/high-capacity rail links, the doubling of the Circumvesuviana railway line in Naples, the two lines connecting Palermo and Catania, and the new SS106 \u201cJonica\u201d motorway. <\/p>\n
The Parma-based company thus continues to contribute to the development of high-speed rail in Italy, with a view to ensuring the sustainability of the Italian transport system. In the north, Impresa Pizzarotti is also working on the high-speed\/high-capacity railway link and the new Belfiore station in Florence, the new Brescia Est – Verona high-speed\/high-capacity railway line, the Verona high-speed\/high-capacity junction – West Entrance, and the Terzo Valico dei Giovi high-speed\/high-capacity railway project and Genoa junction. <\/p>\n
Specifically, the project, which is an integral part of the TEN-T Scandinavia-Mediterranean European railway corridor, represents the continuation of a strategic route connecting the north and south of the country. The new link will increase and improve the efficiency of rail connections in areas of high territorial value, such as Cilento and Vallo di Diano, the Ionian coast, upper and lower Cosentino, the Port of Gioia Tauro area and Reggio Calabria, as well as speeding up connections to Potenza, Calabria and Sicily and an increase in rail freight transport to and from Gioia Tauro. <\/p>\n
IThe project involves the construction of a new 22-kilometre double-track line with high-speed\/high-capacity characteristics, of which approximately 17 kilometres will be in tunnels and the remaining 5 kilometres above ground. The new route will affect the municipalities of Paola, San Lucido, Rende, Montalto Uffugo, San Vincenzo la Costa and San Fili, in the Province of Cosenza. A new station is planned near the entrance to the tunnel on the Cosenza side, in the municipality of Montalto Uffugo, with connecting roads for the local area and the university campus in Rende. The main part of the project and a strategic intervention for the entire line is the new \u201cSantomarco Tunnel\u201d, over 15 kilometres long.
