The Cuma purification plant, whose works are part of the large project that the Campania region launched already in 2012 in the need to adapt and bring it back to the best European technological techniques and practices, today serves an area inhabited by over a million of inhabitants by collecting waste water from 11 municipalities through a network of district collectors that is 49 kilometers long.

After a huge redevelopment project, the structures and equipment were restored and upgraded, and new plant sections were introduced which allowed the plant to reduce its impact on the environment and to recover a series of costs and internal efficiencies that were available but not exploited until then.
As explained by Gianluca di Rienzo, project manager at Impresa Pizzarotti & C. S.p.A., the plant’s technology not only returns clean water, but also leads to the production of biogas or other materials that are reused in other sectors, a concrete example of #circulareconomy .

The production of biogas and electricity are a tangible example of this. “The plant essentially consists of two large lines, the water line and the sludge line. We produce energy through the sludge line. – explained Di Rienzo – The sludge is stored inside reinforced concrete containers which have the function of digesting the sludge and creating the gaseous part, the so-called biogas which is extracted and collected in a gasometer and through a purification process is reused within the production cycle. This biogas contains approximately 65% methane which is reused directly in boilers used for other sectors, or conveyed to engines which have the function of self-producing electricity, energy which is reused within the production cycle, thus managing to cover approximately 30/35% of the system’s needs”.
