Site visit at the Florence High-Speed Rail Link construction site, attended by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, and the Mayor of Florence, Sara Funaro.

A strategic project is taking shape beneath the city: over 7 km of underground track and a new underground high-speed station, designed as a state-of-the-art infrastructure in terms of architecture, sustainability and urban integration.

Work is proceeding according to schedule: the ‘Iris’ TBM has already completed over 75% of the excavation (more than 2.2 km) and is currently working on the underpass beneath Santa Maria Novella, whilst the ‘Marika’, after covering approximately 3 km, is ready to resume its journey northwards. At the same time, work is progressing on the new station, which has now reached a depth of 25 metres.

With an investment of over €2.7 billion, the Passante will enable high-speed and regional services to be separated, freeing up capacity on the surface network and significantly improving the punctuality and frequency of services, with tangible benefits for commuters, businesses and tourism.

As Minister Matteo Salvini emphasised: “It will be an international gem that will welcome hundreds of thousands of passengers” and will help make the Italian rail network increasingly modern, efficient and resilient.

A project that strengthens a central hub in the European corridors and represents a concrete step towards more sustainable and competitive mobility.
