The new artistic lighting of the Bell Tower was inaugurated a few days ago, one hundred years after it was first lit. The ceremony, attended by leading local and regional authorities, including the Archbishop of Pompeii, Monsignor Tommaso Caputo, the President of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca, the Mayor of the Marian city Carmine Lo Sapio and the President of EAV Umberto De Gregorio, had an important symbolic value for the community, pilgrims and visitors.

The lighting project was designed on three different levels. The first involved the installation of external spotlights positioned in the square and on the surrounding roofs to project light onto the bell tower, while the second level saw the positioning of RGB lights, capable of modulating colours according to different liturgical and civil occasions, creating variable lighting effects on the facades of the tower. The third level involved the internal stairwell, where Tunable White technology lights were installed, allowing for variations in shades of white to improve visibility and functionality without altering the aesthetic balance, simulating the variable colour of daylight in the bell tower and creating continuity between the interior and exterior. This design choice was achieved through the use of 108 light bars located on the bell tower’s masonry structure and on the steel structure of the lift shaft.

The result is sober yet striking lighting that enhances the architectural grandeur of the tower without distorting its historical identity. Every detail has been designed to restore the monument to its rightful symbolic prominence, while offering an evocative visual experience in harmony with the urban and religious context that surrounds it.

The entire project is part of a larger redevelopment of Piazza Bartolo Longo by Impresa Pizzarotti, promoted and financed by the Campania Region, under the direction of the Ente Autonomo Volturno, with the coordination of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and the active collaboration of the Municipality and the Sanctuary itself.
