Emerged during the Circumvesuviana railway modernization works in the area of the Via Fucci underground parking lot, whose works are entrusted to Impresa Pizzarotti C. S.p.A. on behalf of EAV Ente Autonomo Volturno.

Presented in recent days to press and authorities, the findings consist of 35 burials in exceptional condition, dating from the period between the 3rd and 1st centuries B.C., before the Roman settlement, and located within a water table where pumps have driven away the water. Among the finds unearthed, covered by plowed furrows submerged in turn by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D., were lava stone columellae, Phoenician-Punic amphorae, remains of wooden poles, coins, cups, a female head in tuff and skeletons of inhumans accompanied by grave goods and roofing tiles stamped with cartouches.

Also present at the meeting were ABAP Superintendent for the Naples metropolitan area Mariano Nuzzo, EAV President Umberto De Gregorio and Pompei Mayor Carmine Lo Sapio. “These are archaeological finds related to three phases: a more recent phase concerns the riverbed where various archaeological materials were poured from the 1st to the 4th century that probably date back to 89 AD.

Then there”s an older phase involving the plowed fields that are under the pumices of 79 AD. – stated Mariano Nuzzo – Under the plowed fields then, there is the necropolis.”

Despite the very important historical discovery, the Superintendence, the Municipality and the EAV share a united line aimed at not delaying the work. “Thanks also to Impresa Pizzarotti, which is doing an excellent job,” said EAV President Umberto De Gregorio, “I am confident that we will be able to move the work forward and at the same time give answers to the scholars who will deepen and study these finds.

The excavation, which is still being analyzed and deepened, is as of today placed under archaeological assistance through the construction of containment works, and the finds will all be subject to restoration.
