ME-CT Consortium: the second breakthrough in the Messina-Catania railway line doubling project

A new milestone has been reached in the Messina–Catania railway line doubling project: the final cross-section of the right-hand track in the Scaletta tunnel, constructed using mechanised excavation and measuring 2,750 m in length, has been completed. In the coming weeks, the TBM will be moved using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) across the two spans of the Itala viaduct (L = 35 m), over a temporary embankment (L = 185 m) and a box girder (L = 10 m), before continuing the excavation of the tunnel’s parallel track, which extends for 4,210 m.
