Work continues on the excavation of the natural tunnels of the HS/HC Terzo Valico carried out by the Giovi Tunnel Consortium by Impresa Pizzarotti & C. S.p.A. and Collini Lavori.

By the end of 2024, the physical progress of the two lots had reached 81% (for a remaining 3,370 metres still to be excavated) and in recent months a production of 132.6 metres was recorded in the Castagnola lot alone and another 32.8 metres in the Cravasco lot where asbestos is present, bringing the total physical progress to 82% (for a remaining 3,179 metres still to be excavated).

In spite of the difficulties due to the thrusts of the rock mass, as a result of which an important Variation Appraisal was approved in 2024, bringing the total amount of the works in the two lots to approximately 1 million Euro, the efforts of all the workers are bearing excellent fruit, with a progressive increase in production over the last two years.

Also not to be forgotten is the important figure of the safety indexes, which in 2024 were significantly lower than in the previous year (number of accidents reduced by 57%, frequency index reduced by 65% and severity index reduced by 80%).

In addition, the last few weeks of 2024 saw the excavation of the first asbestos-free field in the tunnel in the direction of Milano Pari, which bodes well for the continuation of work. In fact, the presence of asbestos has characterised the advancing excavations of the two tunnels in the direction of Milan of the Cravasco lot over the last three years, increasing both organisational and production difficulties exponentially.
