HS/HC Brescia East -Verona: Excavation of San Giorgio Tunnel Completed
Yesterday, at the San Giorgio in Salici construction site in the municipality of Sona (VR), the breakthrough of the San Giorgio Tunnel diaphragm was completed, marking the end of the excavation of one of the main works of the new HS/HC Brescia Est – Verona railway line.
This new line is part of the infrastructure financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP) and is of strategic importance in the Mediterranean Core Corridor, which will connect ports in the south of the Iberian Peninsula to the Ukrainian border, crossing Italy, France, Slovenia and Croatia. With the completion of the excavation of the San Giorgio Tunnel, which joins the Lonato, Calcinato and Colle Baccotto tunnels, the project continues at a great pace.
The 1,450-meter-long tunnel was built using the traditional technique on two simultaneous excavation fronts, with a complex undercrossing phase of the A4 highway, ensuring the continuity of vehicular traffic at all times. This major work involves more than 100 professionals and numerous contractors, who are working tirelessly to complete the project. The final stages will begin in the coming months, with the rehabilitation of the highway carriageways, the construction of the final linings, and the installation of the railroad equipment.
The 48-kilometer Brescia Est – Verona HS/HC line will help relieve congestion at the Brescia and Verona railway junctions, improving punctuality and regularity of transportation for both passengers and freight.
