Following the completion of the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) of the first of the two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) destined for the construction site of the new Palermo-Catania railway Lot 4B (New Enna – Dittaino) on December 8, 2023, the FAT of the second TBM was held today at the Changsha facilities of China Railway Construction Heavy Industry (CRCHI), a leading Chinese company in the construction of these machines.
The two TBMs, after a voyage by ship, will be delivered to Sicily in the next two months to be subsequently assembled at the construction site and started on their underground “journey.”
Lot 4B, which extends between the New Enna and Dittaino station of the Palermo-Catania railway, is part of the larger project of the first macro-phase of upgrading the Palermo-Catania railway line. This section has a development of about 15 km and involves the construction of about 13.5 km of tunnels using mechanized excavation technology, for which the two TBMs are intended. The work is included as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with completion expected by 2026.
