The TBM will excavate the even track of the Orsara tunnel.

It will be called Marina because it will join the Adriatic Sea to the Tyrrhenian Sea: the name was given by the students of the Istituto Omnicomprehensive dei Monti Dauni in Bovino, in the province of Foggia.

The tunnel boring machine will soon begin excavating the 9,871 meters of the Orsara tunnel, a fundamental work on the Bovino-Orsara section, i.e. the terminal section of the Naples-Bari railway route currently being upgraded.

The TBM Marina will allow the mechanized excavation of the even track of the tunnel as well as – at the same time – the installation of the lining ring in prefabricated segments: this is the innovative method of continuous mining, which will allow a reduction in times and downtime as well as greater productivity. For the TBM, the excavation technology adopted is called EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) and involves using the excavated material – put under pressure inside an excavation chamber located behind the cutting head – as active support of the excavation face.
