A new milestone for the Salerno–Reggio Calabria high-speed/high-capacity line

Excavation of the Caterina tunnel, over 1 km long, has been completed on Lot 1A Battipaglia–Romagnano: a symbolic and tangible milestone marking the breakthrough of the tunnel face and the progress of one of the strategic infrastructure projects for the country’s transport network.

As Impresa Pizzarotti, we are proud to contribute to this project as part of the Xenia Consortium, alongside our industrial partners, on behalf of RFI (FS Group). A key infrastructure project, made possible in part by support from the PNRR, which will strengthen the link between Southern and Northern Italy and Europe, improving accessibility and freight transport along vital routes such as the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor.

The construction of the tunnel was made possible by ‘Mireille’, a state-of-the-art TBM, and the continuous work of highly specialised teams, operating safely 24/7. Meanwhile, work continues on numerous fronts, including further tunnels and viaducts, confirming the complexity and ambition of the project.

This achievement represents just one stage in a broader journey: building modern, sustainable infrastructure capable of generating value for local communities.
